Welcome to Bowie!
Every day, we think about how lucky we are to have our office located in Bowie, MD. Founded in 1870 and located approximately 40 minutes from our nation’s capitol in Washington, DC, Bowie is a town full of history and was even previously ranked 28th by CNN Money as one of the best places to live in the United States. Let us take you on a tour inside our wonderful community.
Long Ago
Before the origin of the current city, Governor Samuel Ogle had the Belair Estate built in 1745. Known as Huntington City, it was a small farming community with food crops and tobacco production due to the rich soil. In later years, the Belair Estate became one of the premier horse racing stables in the country, finally closing its doors in 1957.
In 1870, the city was chosen as the site of a major rail junction. It started as a train stop along the Annapolis and Elk Ridge Railroad and the Potomac and Baltimore Railroad, spurring the growth of the city. The name of the city was changed to Bowie, honoring Oden Bowie, the president of the railroad and governor from 1869-1872. The Bowie train station operated until 1989, when Amtrak closed it to open the new station at Bowie State University. The city of Bowie owes its existence to the railway.
Today
What started as a small railway stop, Bowie is now the largest municipality in Prince George’s County and the third largest city in the state of Maryland. Due to the rich history, there are a number of popular museums to explore in our city. Both the Belair Mansion and Bowie Train Station are now museums that are a must see. If baseball and sports are more your speed, then the stadiums for the Nationals and the Washington Football Team are just a short drive away and will be sure to give you the enjoyment you are after.
